In keeping with migrating Kiwis who have done well off-shore theme. Today’s smiley face sticker goes to Scott Dixon, winner of the Indy 500 . Scott Dixon has been a New Zealand celebrity since he was too short to see over the steering wheel. In one of his Formula Ford races it was revealed as he got out of his wrecked car that he had a cushion taped to his bum in order to give him more height. The Scott Dixon seat cushion joke has affectionately stuck.
He started his racing career as a young boy in go-karts and had 30 major wins in Australasia by the age of 12. He then moved to formula fords finishing second in the New Zealand Formula Class II Championships and winning the New Zealand Formula Vee Championships the same season after being granted a special license to compete at the age of 13!
In 1992 Scott was awarded the Formula Holden Rookie of the year, in 1995 he claimed the New Zealand Formula Ford Class Championship, in 1996 won the Formula Ford Class I champs…you can see the pattern here.
The 27-year-old, who won an IndyCar Series title in 2003, Is the first native New Zealander to win the Indianapolis 500, leading 115 of 200 laps.
Congratulations Scott!
